Hi Phoebe...

It's indeed a small world. Both of my parents grew up in Braddock, PA, so this post brings back some good memories for me. This article describes well what I can remember from my early childhood... A small hilly town with brick roads and culture- currently transformed into a desolate area with boarded up homes and gangs. The high schools that my parents attended in the early 60's no longer exist. I'm even sorta afraid to drive through there now-a-days. But it looks like this BLM has found a cozy little home there. My dad use to tell stories of rats in back allies of his home that were the size of small dogs. BLMs? I dunno, but funny anyway. I look forward to adding my own BLM pic to this site someday!

oh wow, i looove braddock! i was born there, but mostly for other reasons it is very near and dear to my heart, which most people don't understand, but i don't understand how they could not understand, so it all comes up even. except for braddock, of course. nothing has come up even for that town in a long time. it's so cool to see something like "transformasium" going on. and of course, also cool that a blm still calls braddock its home.

Aha! Yours is the first posting I have found that may answer my latest burning question; what is the furry dude living under my shed? I moved to Massachusetts 2 weeks ago from So. Cal., and this little guy isn't like anything I've ever seen. He does look rather like a muskrat with a hairy tail, although his tail is kinda short. And wow! He is seriously nervous! I was in the kitchen, watching him raid the leavings from my squirrel feeder, and sneezed; you'd have thought that he'd been shot, the way he exploded. He didn't come out from under the shed for at least 15 minutes. Now that I've read your post, I'm going to have to look up Nutrias, and find out if they live around here. Take heart...you're not alone!

I've known since 1996 that Beavers found our farm in New Jersey. They have been living quite sucessfully here and have created bigger and larger wet-lands. Yesterday, though I had a lifetime experience...I couldnt figure out what I was looking at crossing the field, moving easily, smoothly a large dark mass...two beavers moving as one. They followed a swale towards another field-paddock ..and were obviously intimidated by the horses and the fence. Casually they turned around and retraced their path and as I watched with binoculars they dove into the pond..wished I had the time to take photos...

Council members and city staff convened at a retreat this summer and put their collective heads together. After a considerable amount of blood, sweat, and tears, they came up with the following:

"City of Charlottesville: A Great Place to Live for All of Our Beaverlike Mammals."

A BLM is what we call a "Wug".

I looked at my woebegone husband one day and called him a "wug". He asked me "What is a wug?" I replied, not so cleverly, "You're a wug!"

Some time later we drove by a ground hog, aka "BLM," by the side of the road, and Wug, er, Husband asked me, somewhat accusingly, "Is that a wug!?" I had to admit that a ground hog is a wug. Since then we have discovered many wugs... and I am startled to realize that BLMs are wugs.

Thank you for publishing this most illuminating blog.

My daughter and I visited Wintergreen resort this past weekend. I wanted to travel over the mountain on the old Howardsville Turnpike and we eventually ended up at Wintergreen. We saw a few BLM's waddling about the resort and actually saw one resting in its hole. I looked in and and told my daughter to look too. I wish we had a camera so we could have posted that cute little (dirty) face looking up at us. The BLM's home looked a little like this one except among large snow making equipment instead of tombstones. Maybe they slide around on the ice in the winter (after the humans leave)?

I've seen that BLM at the corner of McIntire and the bypass many a time, and he or she fwiw is, in fact, a groundhog.

Wow it's like a big fat guinea pig! I am jealous that you can see these types of things from your porch. In London we only have squirrels and rats and the mice in the underground. Do any of those count? On Thursday I sighted a dead rat, in my flat, from my cat.
