My Aunt Holly continues to keep the faith…

…which is more than I can say for most of my friends and acquaintances. I know *some* of you have seen BLMs this summer. Come on!

Hi Phoebe - On Sunday, June 29 at 11:30 AM, I spotted from the kitchen window a medium sized groundhog meandering across our garden underneath the bird feeders.  She/he seemed in no particular hurry; I think she/he was there to celebrate Aunt Rita’s birthday….who knows.  This morning I spotted a rather large rabbit.  I realize a rabbit is not a “beaver like” mammal but thought I would report it anyway.  In that ilk, we are now getting hummingbirds since I put up a special feeder for them AND there is a deer coming at night to nibble on some of my flowers.  All of this from Rood Avenue in Windsor, CT (the oldest town in CT celebrating its 375th birthday this summer) and where wildlife is always welcome. Love from your Aunt Holly.

 Thanks Aunt Holly!

My aunt has beavers in her yard

My Aunt Holly writes:

We definitely have a groundhog family living waaaay out back under the tall trees behind that tall tree that fell last year. This really doesn’t surprise me because I had “spied” a rather large creature earlier this summer. Anyway, as you know, I don’t sleep well and am up at rather strange hours. Early Sunday I saw this contigent of them moving about and was quite excited. The little ones are very sweet. I think they will be very safe back there - it’s secluded and Lord know’s there is plenty of natural food.

A Memorial Day beaver

My Aunt Holly writes:

This Friday morning (11:11) before Memorial Day, I saw from my kitchen window a running like hell Memorial Day Beaver. He looked to be in very good shape, about a year old, nicely rounded. Off he or she scurried to our next door neighbor’s backyard where I hope he has a nice safe comfortable home complete with wife/husband and babies. I would welcome him here on our property but we are having extensive landscaping done at the end of the month - oh, that’s now.

[UPDATE - Aunt Holly writes: The BLM I wrote about yesterday was NOT a beaver but a ground hog which makes more sense. I thought about it late last night……..]

Beaver, ground hog, it’s all BLMs and it’s all good.

Breaking news!

Article from the “Hartford Courant” dated May 22, 2007:

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood…..apparently quite a bit if you’re talking power.

Connecticut Light and Power officials told Eyewitness News that a woodchuck in a vacant building caused an outage that affected thousands of customers in downtown Meriden late Tuesday morning.

More than 4,000 - about 15% of the city - lost power in the 10:00 AM hour. Downtown was without power and the police department had to go on generator power. The woodchuck escaped capture was last seen running toward the wooded lot next to the vacant building.

Welcome chipmunk

My Aunt Holly writes:

On Wednesday, during this glorious weather we have been having here in Connecticut, I was out in the backyard surveying all the work to be done and also feeding the birds / squirrels when out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a movement. Pivoting quickly to my left, I spotted the dearest little chipmunk scooting across the yard with a peanut in its mouth. Up the drainpipe it went. I find this unusual because in the 25 years we have lived here, I have never seen a chipmunk. I can only hope it has a large family and that I see it and them again soon. Welcome chipmunk.

Thanks Aunt Holly! We at beaverlikemammals.com join you in hoping that an entire chipmunk family has moved into your backyard.

He has risen! An Easter BLM sighting

My mom writes:

Just wanted to let you know that your Aunt Roe and I, while driving over to pick up Grandma, spotted a beaver like mammal on I91 between exits 37 and 38. It was approximately at 12:27PM. The animal stood for a few second and then slowly waddled back to a wooded area. It had a kind face and was a goodly size. momxx

My Aunt Holly spies a beaver

Hey Phoebe - I am so excited because I saw a beaver just in time for your new web site. Because of all the rain we had here last week in Connecticut, a large pool formed in my next door neighbor’s yard and lo and behold (kind of like at Christmas) I spotted a BLM - and I think it was a beaver. I took Wishbone out there this morning but he didn’t track it down. Perhaps it is gone but I will keep an eye out.
